Clear vs. Metal Dental Retainers After Braces

Dental braces and retainers are two orthodontic solutions that are incredibly intertwined. While most people do not spend their orthodontic treatment thinking about wearing a retainer after getting their braces off, it is an essential component of an overall treatment plan. As a 19605 general dentist, we suggest both clear and metal dental retainers, depending on the patient, how far the teeth have moved, and the likelihood of them remaining in place.

Clear Retainers

As a general dentist, we can have clear retainers created to surround your teeth entirely. This way, they will not move but will be held securely in place. A clear plastic retainer is discreet and either hardly noticeable or barely noticeable to people you interact with. As long as you keep it and your teeth clean, your true smile will show through and not your retainer. While many of our 19605 patients prefer this option, you should be aware they typically need to be replaced every couple of years.

Metal Dental Retainer

This is a combination of acrylic and plastic that rests on the top of your mouth or palate. A metal wire is secured to it and surrounds the front of your teeth. Since the acrylic is molded to fit your mouth, it will be snug and comfortable. This portion of the retainer can be created in a variety of colors, which makes it more fun for children. They can be adjusted if necessary, so if your teeth do move slightly, the retainer can be changed accordingly. The challenge that many of our Reading, PA patients have is that the metal wire is noticeable, and it can be difficult to speak when wearing this type of retainer.

Good news: You should only need your dental braces and retainers for a while. They will be needed 24/7 until we are confident your teeth are fairly secure. Afterward, you should only need your retainer at night while sleeping.
